Have you ever had the feeling of returning to a place you've never visited before? That deep, inherent sensation that the place was waiting for you, just like your family does when you go back home...
The Lazaretta Island Residency Lab took place from 20 - 28 August 2028 in Syros, Greece, bringing together artists and festival makers from across the Arab and SWANA region for an eight‑day programme. Conceived as a catalyst to inspire the participants, the Lab created a rare space to see, feel, and imagine different outcomes for the future together.
Developed in partnership between Cinesthesia and The Festival Academy, the programme aimed to strengthen connections between artists and festivals leaders from the island, Arab and SWANA region, and the wider international arts sector. It centred around the notion of Island life; living both in peace and conflict with your surroundings and how acceptance can be your guide. Through visiting and inviting local artists and philosophers, collective dinners, silent walks and swims, and visiting the Lazaretta Ruins, participants engaged in deep exchange, with others and themselves.
Supported by the Drosos Foundation and The South Aegean Region, the Lab brought together a diverse group of practitioners, reflecting a collective investment in building a sustainable, transnational community.
