Giortes Rokkas Festival

Giortes Rokkas is the celebration that brings together society and culture, in the villages of Rokka and Kera, located in the greater region of Chania.

It’s a celebration of the arts organized by the locals themselves, that attracts visitors from all around the world. The two cultural associations of the villages play an active and decisive role, organizing musical, theatrical, visual events and various educational activities.

Giortes Rokkas first took place in the summer of 2013 and have been taking place every year since at the same meeting point, the archaeological site of Rokka Kissamos, on the night of the full moon of August.

The square and the village cafe, the proud archaeological site of Rokka, the chambers of abandoned houses, the warm food that the resident visitors and creators love, the shady trees of Kera, the stones that have so much history, the spectators who experience the unique experience from place to place, the music in the full moon, the laughter from the workshops, the applause after the performance, the works of art, the residents on the doorstep of the open houses, and of course the participants, all become pieces of the same mirror: they let themselves penetrate and themselves reflect the light that unites us.

The point of reference of the artistic direction of Giortes Rokkas was the transformation of Kera village into a grand theatrical stage, with the original theater act of Kera A Stage, under the artistic direction of Mety Panagiotopoulou. A whole village became the live stage where the visitor, with his map at hand, attended theatrical acts and short interpretations of a versatile and diverse troupe.

During the "Kera A Stage" 2023 event, we walked through the narrow streets of Kera with the map at hand, discovering dance events in the courtyards and corners. We will meet different types of dance there: ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, breakdance, dance theater, latin, ballroom (social dances), with established artists who invited us to follow in their footsteps.
