Open Call Atelier Nicosia: Bursary for Festival Makers from Conflict Regions

The Festival Academy is currently running a special open call for the 20th edition of the Atelier for Young Festival Managers that will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 7 to 13 October 2013, organized in partnership with the Home for Cooperation through the Buffer Fringe Performing Arts Festival. Festival makers from conflict regions such as (but not limited to) Afghanistan, Argentina, Brazil, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iraq, Kurdistan, Lebanon, Mali, Palestine, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen ara invited to apply to have their participation fee and international travel costs covered.
The Atelier brings together up to 35 young festival managers from all over the world to spend 7 days with a group of young and experienced festival leaders, cultural activists, cross-sector experts, and artists in Nicosia during the Buffer Fringe Festival 2022, and to engage in a global conversation about today’s challenges regarding festivals, the role of art and culture in communities and contested spaces, amongst other topics. The Atelier offers an opportunity to explore how festivals can become spaces for exploring global issues and reflect upon the role that festivals play within areas marked by conflict. We will explore how festivals embody the possibility for fostering spaces for intergenerational dialogue as well as change through culture.
Up to 8 selected applicants will have their participation fee and international travel costs covered. In the selection process, the diversity of the group is taken into account in regards to gender, age, geography, social background, level of ability, etc.
Applicants are asked to provide information on who they are, what their work experience is, their expectations related to the programme, and most importantly their motivation to participate. In the case of this special call for applications, they will also be asked to provide information on the conflict region they apply from, and their experience or perspective of the arts and festivals in strengthening resilience and resistance in relation to this context.
