Voices From: Reclaiming the Narrative
Register now for the second session of our Voices From series, taking place on Thursday, 30th January, at 3 PM (UTC +1), in which we welcome Carol Sansour and Vanessa Bowles to speak about representation, film and ways to reclaim female Arab voices through film and poetry.
Carol Sansour, a Palestinian poet and cultural producer based in Athens, is director of the Athens Palestine Film Festival and founder of Dounias, a non-profit that showcases Palestinian and Arab art in Greece. Carol will share her experience as both a poet and a festival coordinator, highlighting the challenges of creating space for Palestinian voices in the arts.
Vanessa Bowles is a Lebanese/British producer and director of numerous award-winning films. Her work spans documentaries such as Once Upon a Time in Iraq, which won a BAFTA and other prestigious awards, and Saudi Arabia Uncovered, which earned an Emmy. Vanessa will discuss the obstacles faced while making her latest film Kill Zone: Inside Gaza and the courageous efforts of the team on the ground.
Voices From is an online series run by Festival Academy that was born out of the Sharing Places Lab in Blanca, Spain and is co-organised by a working group of Alumni who took part in it. The series acts as an open space to listen to artists of all disciplines, filmmakers, cultural workers and festival makers who add valuable context to the current situation in regions that face conflict or societal tension and explore how art can challenge narratives, strengthen resilience, and promote understanding.
The 90-minute session is curated and moderated by Marina Barham (Artistic Director, Al-Harah Theater, Palestine) and Raisa Desypri (Greece/UK).
